Washington’s Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States.

It is also a state holiday in most states where it is known by a variety of names including Presidents Day and Washington’s and Lincoln’s Birthday and officially celebrates, depending upon the state, Washington alone, Washington and Lincoln, or some other combination of U.S. presidents. Some states celebrate Washington and the third president Thomas Jefferson but not Lincoln.

Lincoln’s Birthday is a legal holiday in some U.S. states, including Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, New Jersey, and New York. It is observed on the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth on February 12, 1809.

In other states, a celebration of Lincoln’s birthday is combined with a celebration of Washington’s Birthday or as part of Presidents’ Day. These celebrations occur on the same day as the Federal holiday, the third Monday of February, and not on Washington’s or Lincoln’s actual birthday.

Groundhog Day (Canadian French: Jour de la Marmotte; Pennsylvania German: Grundsaudaag, Murmeltiertag) is a day celebrated on February 2. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks.

This allows for a more consistent medium, giving the sculptors the ability to execute their gravity-defying designs.
